Blending sustainability, playfulness, and precision, Modula explores how design can be both functional and expressive. It’s more than a light - it’s a platform for personalisation, a conversation starter, and a statement piece for modern interiors. Through careful research, iterative prototyping, and a stop-motion animation that captures its kinetic charm, Modula demonstrates how a single idea can illuminate not just a room, but a whole approach to design.

Lighting as a Living System

I wanted to explore how a single light could grow into something much larger. Using LEDs housed in repurposed glass bottles, I designed each light as a module that could connect with others. A few could form a desk lamp, while a larger collection could become a chandelier or lighting installation.

Sustainability That Shines

Repurposed glass bottles became the main housing for each light. Rather than hiding their previous use, I wanted the glass itself to become part of the character of the design while giving an existing material a new purpose.

Custom Light, Personal Atmosphere

Modern life demands flexibility, but lighting doesn't always keep up. This system adjusts brightness, warmth, and tone to suit the user, offering soft ambient glows for evenings, concentrated desk lighting for work, and blue-light options for late-night study. Every module is designed with eye comfort in mind, balancing luminosity with sensitivity.

Design by Dialogue

This project was informed by intimate user research. By listening to real householders, students, and workspace users, the design evolved to meet both functional and aesthetic needs. Preferences for warm light, natural glass refraction, and flexible arrangements guided every detail, from the diameter of the bottle casings to the ergonomics of the modular connections.

From Sketch to Stop-Motion Reality

I brought this project to life in a stop-motion animation that demonstrates its playful modularity and the infinite combinations it allows. Watching each block click, light, and shine in sequence makes the system feel alive, not just functional: a kinetic sculpture for the home.

Future-Forward Interiors

The interesting part of Modula is that there isn't really one finished arrangement. The same pieces can be rearranged depending on the room, the type of lighting needed, or simply what the user wants to make.
